An attitude is abstract, we cannot touch it, but it is extremely powerful and impactful. It is more than a passing thought or feeling - it is a mindset, a perspective or a way of looking at life. Have you noticed how someone with a bad attitude can impact the atmosphere in a negative way? And in the same way someone with a great attitude can also impact the atmosphere in a positive way. So why are attitudes so important? If they are abstract and unseen why are they significant?
Proverbs 23: 7 says, “As a man thinketh in his heart, so he is.” In other words, your mindset, or your attitude determines the person you become. So our attitude is exceptionally important and we should work at developing good attitudes to help us to live successful lives.
Our attitude affects the way we handle life: We determine our approach to life, no one else. No one can hinder us or stop us unless we allow them to. If we have a positive attitude then that is what we will take with us into our day. Likewise, if we have a negative attitude our day will be filled with negativity. Our attitude, or our mindset will determine how we handle our day.
Our attitude affects the way we interact with others: We may think our attitude is hidden, but it will spill out of us during the day. If you have a glass of milk in your hand and someone bumps into you what will they get? Milk…everywhere! What do people get when they bump into you - abuse, foul language, or kindness and respect? What your heart is full of will flow out of you. If you are filled with anger and negativity that is what will come out of you when people bump into you.
Our attitude will determine if we succeed or fail: If you are running a race and you have a negative attitude I can almost guarantee that you will not do well in that race. Your negative attitude will impact the way you run and the way you finish your race. Your attitude to life will determine whether you succeed or fail.
Our attitude can turn problems into stepping-stones: When your attitude to life is great you see problems as stepping-stones not stumbling blocks. Some of the greatest achievements ever accomplished by people have been the result of finding solutions to their problems.
So, even though you cannot see an attitude people can sense your attitude. If you have a bad attitude, I encourage you to take a few moments to reflect. Ask God to help you to change your mindset so that you can face your day with courage. Good attitudes do not come naturally, you have to nurture a good attitude and work consistently at keeping a right one. I know that as you spend some time in reflection and adjusting your attitude your day will be better and more blessed than you could ever anticipate.
