CHRISTIANS USING SOCIAL MEDIA TO BULLY AND MANIPULATE!

I have to be honest and admit that there are times I have been tempted to close down my Facebook account.  It is not that I don't enjoy the benefits of social media...I do!  I love being in touch with long lost friends, and I enjoy seeing developments in people's lives. I also do believe the we can employ social media to get important issues into the public domain. So, yes I am aware of  the privileges of networking  in the 21st Century.

However, there are some extremely intolerant and bigoted people out there!  Many of them wear their badges of cynicism and skepticism with pride - they proclaim boldly that they are Christians and at the same time flaunt their opinions arrogantly.  There are times I wish that they would take off their Christian badges and not bring dishonor to Jesus.

Why, I ask, do people have to rant and rave about their opinions all over social media?  Okay, I understand that there are times we want to express opinions and we definitely should be a voice for the downtrodden, the widow, the orphan, and the marginalized.  Absolutely!  And social media is a helpful tool that can open people's eyes to some of the incredible devastation, poverty, killing, and horror going on in our world.  But so many of these people lose their voices when they become arrogant and rant and rave against people who do not see things in the same light as them.

So let us all try to remember:

  • There is more than our perspective on an issue
  • We should allow other people to express their opinions.
  • We can disagree in an agreeable way.
  • We should never be rude or condescending to anyone - its not Christlike!
  • We should try to live at "peace with all men" as the Bible exhorts us to.
  • We should "speak the truth in love."
  • We should never be arrogant.
  • We should love everyone even those with differing opinions.

Okay, let me say this!  I have seen Christians being horribly unkind to each other on Facebook.  They 'unfriend' people with differing views, and they scandalize those who don't agree with their point of view.  I sometimes wonder what Bible they read!  Of course we need to have convictions and beliefs.  But we also need to learn how to share those values with other people.  Our voice becomes powerless when we are unkind, arrogant, and opinionated.  There are times people say things I agree with, but there is so much vitriol in their posts I cannot read them.

So that is my say for this Thursday morning.  Jesus said, "You are the light of the world."  Let your light shine today!  I pray that people will find the Jesus in your life irresistible.

I am and always will be,

recklessly abandoned, ruthlessly committed and in relentless pursuit of Jesus,

Carol
