I pause today, (Constitution Day) to say thank you to the Lord for this great land and its wonderful people.  I am thankful that I have the privilege of living and serving in this great country.

I have to be honest and say that I have seen many changes in the last number of years.  Some of those changes have saddened me and made me wonder about the direction this great nation is taking.

But I remind myself of a verse in the book of Colossians 1: 17: "He is before all things, and in him all things hold together."  This verse comforts me on a number of levels:

  1. God existed before the creation of the world:  God's creative power reminds me that He is omnipotent.  He is more powerful than any ruler, king, president or government.  He existed before anyone or anything.
  2. God holds everything together:  God is not merely a transcendent God detached from His creation—He is an immanent God deeply involved in the story of our personal lives and of this world.  God is bigger than Downing Street or Washington!  In fact, even though those rulers are not aware of it, God is in absolute control of His world.  That gives me comfort.  "He holds everything together."  And the most amazing truth is that "He holds" even the tiny details of our lives together.
  3. God loves His creation:  God's Word tells us over and over again how passionately in love God is with the people He created.  He made us in His image and He loves us.  What a comfort to know that God is committed to His world and the people in it.
  4. God knows everything: God was there before the creation of His world, He was there when He formed us in our mother's wombs (Psalm 139) and He will be with us to the end of our days.  God sees the future even though I do not.  I can trust Him with my future.  He loves me, of that I am sure!  So I can trust Him with a future I am uncertain about.  I can trust Him for the country I live in.  I know He will give me grace with every situation to live as His follower in this world.

So on this day in our history, stop and remind yourself that God holds all things together. Your problem may loom large, but it is in the Hands of an eternal, powerful, all knowing God.  You can trust Him.  Let us also remember to pray for our leaders and for our nation.

I am and always will be,

recklessly abandoned, ruthlessly committed and in relentless pursuit of Jesus,
